From the desk of Rabbi Perry Tirschwell
It was a powerful pre-Rosh Hashanah week of
selichot and programs at WYHS. May our students' and
teachers' prayers on behalf of their families, friends, communities,
and our brethren in Israel be answered during this high holiday
season.
Please check out the revised calendars and schedules
available as links below the article about the Neta program.

Selichot Night ala
WYHS |
|
Last weekend's selichot programs were a huge
success! At sophomore Jonathan Struhl's house in Boca, the
sophomore and junior boys had a blast swimming and playing
basketball and pool with their Rebbeim! Since it wouldn't
be a WYHS event without food, everyone also enjoyed pizza and
ice cream with every imaginable topping!
Rabbi Chaim Lanner shared a dvar Torah with the boys
about asking G-d to view us as one of his "Shabbos
shirt guys". Selichot began at chatzot and were
led by Rabbi Ben Sugerman.
The sophomore and junior girls also had an unbelievable
time at their pool party at junior Jessica Hoffman's house in
Hollywood. The girls and their teachers went swimming and
relaxed by the poolside and, of course, ate pizza and ice
cream with "the works"! Right before Selichot, the
girls heard an inspirational dvar Torah given by
Assistant Principal, Mrs. Ora Lee Kanner, followed by a
spontaneous kumsitz. At midnight, several WYHS
boys joined the girls to make a minyan for
selichot, which were led by Rabbi Spodek.
Thank you to the Struhls and Hoffmans for opening up their
homes to all these wet but happy students and teachers!

Seniors Help Frosh "Get In The
Mood" |
|
Yesterday afternoon, WYHS seniors and freshmen took
time out of their busy school schedules to get to know each
other a little better! Students from these two grades left
school after mincha for an hour and a half of bowling. The
seniors and freshmen bowled together, and in some cases
the competition was fierce! Congratulations to high scorers,
freshman Jason Mann and senior Dina Turetsky!
After bowling, students went to the JCC for a delicious
make-your-own-sub deli dinner. Following dinner,
seniors and freshmen broke into small groups to learn about
Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur, and teshuva. In each group, the
seniors taught freshmen material they prepared during
their weekly Leadership Training Seminar.
Thank you to the Adolph and Rose Levis JCC for the
use of their activity center for this memorable event!

Amazing Soccer and Volleyball
Victories |
|
This was another unbelievably exciting week in the
world of WYHS sports! On Wednesday, the girls varsity
volleyball team was victorious over David Posnack
Hebrew Day School in a double-header. The Storm won
both matches 3-0, defeating Posnack in six straight sets!
Congratulations to junior Louise Jacobovitz on her long
serving streaks and to freshmen Shira Borzak and Stephanie
Trachtenberg and senior Shira Pritzker on making some huge
saves! Kudos to seniors Ilana Kasztl and Dina Turetsky for
their perfect sets and spikes! The whole team played
incredibly well!
The WYHS boys varsity soccer team is really on a
roll! Coming off their huge victory last week, the Yeshiva
Storm beat Boca Prep 4-1 on Monday! Two of the goals
were scored by sophomore Jordan Lieber, and one goal each was
scored by sophomores Jon Struhl and Dov Lieber. Sophomore
Brian Surasky had two amazing assists to help bring the team
to victory. Congratulations to the entire team on this big
win!

Groundbreaking Neta Hebrew
Program |
|
In keeping with our constant efforts to
implement dynamic new programs, WYHS has joined the NETA
Hebrew Language Initiative. The NETA curriculum is being
developed by Hebrew language specialists from the Hebrew
University of Jerusalem, coordinated in North America by
Hebrew College, and funded by the Avi Chai Foundation.
The goal of this project is to promote students'
understanding of their history and culture and to cultivate
strong ties to the State of Israel through a study of
the Hebrew language. This is accomplished by employing a
standardized, sequential Hebrew language curriculum
filled with dynamic theme- based content and incorporating
various media such as music, poetry, and art.
WYHS has joined over 30 schools from around the
globe in participating in this exciting project. Our
Hebrew teachers have already attended training workshops in
Boston during the summer and will attend regional workshops in
South Florida a number of times a year. NETA provides a mentor
who will meet with our teachers and observe classes every two
weeks to provide support for the program.
